This is the first of the summer shows that I’ve viewed, and it’s certainly one of those on-the-fence type of series. First off, why was the opening song by marble sooooooo slooooow? Opening sequences can be peaceful and tranquil, but this one was more like a lullaby. It’s a shame since we know know what marble is capable of singing after Hidamari Sketch.
From what I can grasp so far, Umi Monogatari is about mermaids and their shenanigans with land dwellers. My first pet peeve is that the mermaids have human legs which kind of takes away from the whole mystical look of mermaids. The second issue is Marin’s overexhubarant try-too-hard personality which only masks her ignorance. It would have been one thing if Kanon had legimately wanted to find that ring again, but her boyfriend dumped her and she has every right to be pissed. But I’m sure in the next episode or so, there’ll be some campy wholesome reason why he dumped her and everything will be glazed over.
The only part I found interesting was the ending in which a demonic presence is released from a grave by Urin, Marin’s sister. It infuses itself in Kanon’s ring and creates an evil aura over the island. This will probably bring forth some special power that Kanon has, if her glowing hair in the OP is a hint.
The ending song was kind of cute, but weird at the same time with the mermaid seemingly committing suicide. I guess it’s playing on the original Little Mermaid story (not the Disney version), and I wonder if it’s forshadowing how things will work out with Kanon and Marin. It was cool to hear a Masumi Itou song since I haven’t heard her since Azumanga Daioh and Haibane Renmei.
